7. Proposed Dry-Dock at Suva, Fiji Islands.

The Chairman read a letter which had been received from

the head Office in New Zealand of the Union Steamship Co 'pany,

in response to the Committee's inquiry regarding the construction of the proposed dry-dock at Suva (see paragraph 9

of minutes of 168th Meeting). The views of this company were

in agreement with those already received from the other steam--

ship companies consulted, and the Committee agreed that the

Colonial Office should be advised that the Committee were

unable to recommend that the construction of the dry-dock in

question should be undertaken.

Supply of Electricity to ships in Fort (vide paragraph

10 of Minutes of 168th meeting).

The Chairman reported that he had had discussions with

Mr. Cleminson of the Chamber of shipping, and also with

Sir Archibald age of the Central Electricity Board, on this

subject, and it had been agreed that Mr. Hobson (one of the

experts of the Board) and Mr. Cleminson should informally

consult together with a view to preparing a first draft of the

requirements of the Shipowners. Mr. Cleminson had undertaken

to consult the Chairman informally when these proposals were

ready in order to ascertain whether they were of a kind which

the Committee would be likely to take into consideration.

Ottawa Conference.

g.

The Chairman reminded the Committee that it was usual for

the Committee to present to each succeeding Imperial Conference

a report on progress and work undertaken. The present

Conference at Ottawa was, however, of a special character,

being in effect a continuation of the last London Conference,

and it was understood that it was not likely that shipping

questions, as such, would come before the Conference. In view
